Thyroid Disorders and Infertility

By Pauline Go

Normally when talk about infertility, it is always associated with problems of the fallopian tube, sperm count or sperm motility. Rarely do people think that having problems with the thyroid gland can lead to infertility, or at least thyroid disorders will make it difficult for the woman to conceive.

The thyroid gland is located in the neck, just under the Adam’s apple. It is responsible for secreting two important hormones, namely thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which help to regulate the proper functioning of the body.

There are primarily two types of thyroid disorders — hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. In hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland becomes underactive and does not secrete sufficient amounts of hormones. As a result the body processes become sluggish and slow. Women who suffer from hypothyroidism have many symptoms including weight gain, fatigue, muscular pain, problems with the digestive system, heavy menstruation and long menstrual cycle. Heavy menstruation causes the body to lose a lot of blood and this can result in anemia and depletion of vitamins, which reduce the chances of conception. So also with weight gain.

An over active thyroid gland leads to hyperthyroidism. Here the thyroid process hormones in excess and the woman ends up suffering from fatigue, weight loss, light menstruation or no menstruation, palpitations and increased heart rate. The fact that menstruation stops, points to cessation of ovulation and therefore, infertility.

There are medications available to help overcome the problems of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Taking proper medication thyroid disorders will improve your chances of getting pregnant. There are other invasive procedures to help reduce the size of the thyroid gland but invariably you will still have to take medication.

Did You Know Cosmetics Can Cause Fertility Problems?

By Pauline Go

Did you know that when you are pregnant with a baby boy, the first three months of your pregnancy are extremely vital for your boy’s future fertility? I am sure that you did not know this.

Researchers from Edinburgh University have managed to show results that are quite alarming. When you are pregnant with a male fetus and you use cosmetics, certain chemicals in the cosmetics can cause infertility in your son after he becomes mature adult. Sadly many of us use the cosmetics with these chemicals quite regularly without realizing that we will be instrumental in our sons having fertility problems.

This research has again brought up the debate of using natural and herbal cosmetics to the forefront. After all, our skin is the largest organ in our body and it tends to absorb anything put on it. The cosmetics you use will contain ingredients that will be absorbed by the skin and will be fed to the fetus by way of your blood stream. Some of these ingredients are responsible for blocking hormones. In addition, scientists also found via their research that many of these chemicals could increase the risk of a baby boy developing other problems related to the reproductive system.

If you are planning to get pregnant, it is of utmost importance that you change your lifestyle and avoid using cosmetics and perfumes that contain chemicals. You will be putting your baby boy at risk while he is growing in your uterus. The other thing is that if these cosmetics are harmful for your baby boy, imagine the effects they can have on you?

How Stress and Fertility Are Connected

By Pauline Go

When we are stressed, our body produces adrenalin to help us cope with the stressful situation. It is because of this hormone that our body is able to handle stress so effectively. However, adrenalin is also responsible for inhibiting the utilization of progesterone, which is important for female fertility.

When our body is under stress, it some decides that we should not get pregnant. The logic is simple. First self-protection and self-preservation, then procreation. This is a good thing because under a tense situation, we will not be able to take care of a growing fetus and this could have serious physiological and physical repercussions on the fetus. In addition, in a stressful situation the last thing you want to do is suffer from nausea and tiredness.

Sometimes it can so happen that our body reacts to a situation thinking that it is stress and this in turn stops you from conceiving. Under these circumstances, you have let your body know that it is reacting incorrectly and you are in no danger. This can be achieved by appropriate stress reducers like exercise, meditation, yoga, drinking ample water, chewing your food properly and getting sufficient sleep and rest at night.

If you are in a constant state of stress, this will reduce the blood flow to your uterus and ovaries, thereby hindering fertility. However, it is not just stress that contributes to problems connected with fertility. There are many hormonal factors that come into play and coupled with high levels of stress, you can suffer from infertility that a doctor may not be able to explain. Even receiving treatment for infertility can put your body through stress.

The best way to resolve stress related infertility to eliminate external stress. These are external situations that you have control over and will work wonders towards helping your hormones to return to normal. So, if you have no medical-related fertility problems, you should be able to conceive as long as your stress levels are low or negligible.
